My Whoodle

Whoodle Appearance

Whoodles are known for their wide variety of colors, shapes, sizes and even coats. But their appearance can range quite a bit as compared to some other breeds. Below we will go over some of the standards of what you can expect a Whoodle to look like. Puppies can have any combination of base colors, pattern type, and coat type.

Colors

Whoodles can come in almost any color coat, but the most common is the standard “Wheaten” or cream, associated with the Wheaten Terrier. Combinations of black/cream, red/cream, cream/merle, solid colors, merle, and tri-color are not uncommon in this breed! Whoodles are also know for lightening up over time, which makes predicting their mature color difficult and somewhat of a surprise, though it is possible they will retain the color they were born with.

Base Colors

Wheaten (cream):
This color can mature into a rich apricot but often becomes even lighter while retaining the darker ears like the Wheaten. This is by far the most common coat color among Whoodles, Being the only color carried by the Wheaten Terrier 50% Whoodle puppies will be this color.

Red:
Puppies born solid red typically stay somewhat red and typically lighten slightly into a very rich, toffee color. Occasionally a red coat can lighten into a smokey red.

Black:
Solid black Whoodles will stay solid black.

(Solid black is often considered undesirable and can be difficult for breeders to fund the right home. For that reason, thought gene testing, we have never, and have no plans to intentionally produce solid black puppies.)

Pattern variations

Sable:
Tips of some of the hair is darker than the main color. It is usually most noticeable around the ears and muzzle, can be either a grey or just a darker version of the primary color. Again, because this is brought from the Wheaten Terrier, this is by far the most common pattern among Whoodles.

Phantom:
The puppy will have a main color (cream/red/black) covering the majority of their coat, accompanied by tan eyebrows, chest and backside of their legs.

Tri:
Is exactly like phantom except it is accompanied by a white area on their chest and can have whit around the feet.

Merle:
This is the random patches all over the puppies body. The bigger and darker patches will usually stay but, the smaller or lighter patches will fade into the puppies main color. The patches that do stay often fade to a smoky greay.

Coat Types

Because both Wheatens and Poodles have hair rather than fur, like most other dog breeds, Whoodles are considered hypoallergenic or “Non-Sheding.”

Genetically there are a few different types of coats a Whoodle can have, depending on the genertatin (F1/F1B/F2.) The difference in coat is defined by different genotypes that can come in different combinations. The CU Locus gene can come in three different genotype pairs:

CuC/CuC A dog who carries the CuC/CuC combination will have a curly coat, imagine this combination as the typical poodle coat. When bred to another dog who carries the same gene, their offspring will pass on CuC to 100% of their offspring.

Cu/Cu Dogs who carry two copies of the Cu genotype will have a straight coat. Even though Wheaten Terriers have some waves, this is the coat type of a purebred Wheaten Terrier. A dog with this genotype combination will pass on Cu to 100% of its offspring. When bred to another dog who carries the same gene, their offspring will pass on Cu gene to 100% of their offspring.

When a purebred Poodle is bred to a purebred Wheaten Terrer, the puppies in a litter will have a 100% chance of having CuC/Cu gene. This means that 100% of the offspring will  manifest a coat on a spectrum between wavy and loose curls. This gene type will never produce full curls or straight coats

Below are a few examples of the typical Coat Types – All of the dogs shown below are My Whoodle first generation (50% Wheaten Terrier / 50% Poodle) Whoodles.
